Complaining to the Commonwealth Ombudsman

When DVA’s own complaint process has failed, what the Ombudsman can do, and how to write a complaint they can investigate.

The Commonwealth Ombudsman can investigate whether DVA’s administration was wrong, unfair, or unreasonable. The Ombudsman cannot overturn a VRB-style merits decision and cannot order a CDDA payment, but can recommend action, including that DVA look at CDDA, expedition, or a better explanation. Use DVA’s own complaint channels first unless there is a good reason not to.

A complaint that can be investigated

  • Who you are, which claim numbers, what decision or delay you are talking about.
  • A short timeline (one page).
  • What you already asked DVA to do, and their response (or silence).
  • The specific questions you want investigated — not a life story. Example: how many hardship files flagged for expedition in February were still untouched at week seven; what triage rules applied; whether a welfare check affected priority.
  • The outcome you want: a decision by a date, an explanation, a referral to CDDA, better communication.

Keep Royal Commission findings and reputational arguments for one paragraph at most. Investigators work from documents and statutory functions. Attach the expedition flag, not an essay about trust.
